What is Literacy Acquisition?
And Why is it So Important?

Literacy Acquisition refers to all the components involved in learning to read, write, and speak. The primary goal is to be clearly understood, with the ultimate aim of using these skills to unlock limitless opportunities for a child's future! Below is a list of the eight basic elements of literacy acquisition that make up the puzzle of reading and writing:

1

Phonemic Awareness

The ability to hear, identify, and manipulate individual sounds (phonemes) in spoken words.

2

Phonics

The relationship between letters and sounds, and how to use this knowledge to read and spell words.

3

Fluency

The ability to read text accurately, quickly, and with proper expression and comprehension.

4

Vocabulary

The knowledge of word meanings, including the ability to understand and use a variety of words in different contexts.

The ability to express thoughts and ideas clearly and effectively in written form.

Oral Language

The ability to use spoken language to communicate effectively, including listening and speaking skills.

My Tutoring Services:

Reading

Reading is more complex than many realize, involving five of the eight essential elements of Literacy Acquisition. Starting in 4th grade, reading makes up the majority of a student's learning in both quantity and quality! I will assess your child's overall Literacy performace, identify areas of growth, and create a personal literacy acquisition program dedicated to furthering their reading development.

Writing

If you read the "What is Literacy Acquisition?" section, you'll notice that writing is one of the eight key elements. Given its complexity, writing deserves its own dedicated assessment and tutoring focus! I will assess your child's overall writing performace, identify areas of growth, and create a personal writing program dedicated to furthering their writing development.

Pedagogy

Pedagogy is the method and practice of teaching, including strategies to help students learn effectively. It can be overwhelming for parents to navigate on their own, especially without prior experience. I offer personalized support through in-person or virtual meetings, helping you refine your approach and ensure your child becomes a confident learner. This service is ideal for parents needing extra help or homeschooling families seeking guidance.

Questions

What if I have multiple kids who need tutoring?

I know that hiring a tutor can be a tough financial decision, especially when you have more than one child needing support. I'm here to help make it more manageable for you. We can discuss options like reducing the hourly rate by scheduling back-to-back sessions, whether in person or virtual. Another option is to lower costs by setting up a monthly payment plan instead of paying session by session. Don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions—I’m happy to work with you to find the best solution!

How much workload will tutoring add to my child's day?

As a teacher focusing on homeschool groups, my goal is to minimize any additional workload for your child. I believe that kids need time to play and relax outside of their academic responsibilities. To support this, I’ll work with the curriculum you're already using and build upon it to help your child strengthen their literacy skills. While some extra practice may occasionally be necessary, my aim is to integrate and reinforce what they are already learning, so their tutoring experience feels seamless and natural. To top it off, this approach may also help your child complete other schoolwork more efficiently along the way!

What hours are available to tutor?

I currently have availability for a few more students and am looking to fill the remaining spots in my schedule. Please take a look at my calendar to view available times.
